At The School, we acknowledge that children learn in diverse ways and according to individual time frames.  Sometimes a child may benefit from having material presented in a different format or may fully master new concepts only after greater exposure and repetition.  In order to meet the unique needs of each student, support from the learning specialist is available in a variety of ways:
Meeting with individual teachers to discuss how curriculum and class presentations can be differentiated for a learner;
Pushing in to classes to provide extra support for individuals or small groups of students;
Utilizing the AcE (Academic Enrichment) period for giving students one-on-one assistance and encouragement;
Scheduling organizational check-ins for individual students or small groups;
Providing after school support (available everyday from 3:30-5:30) to help students prioritize their assignments and manage their time more effectively while receiving additional help in their academic subjects;
Working with parents/families to support them in becoming effective team members in their child’s learning; and
Analyzing test results so they provide useful feedback to families and faculty.

The CST is a multidisciplinary team that is responsible for supporting the academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being of every child at The School by delivering psychological services including individual and group counseling, assessment, remediation, push-in classroom support, enrichment, parent/teacher consultation and other educational activities.  Members of the team include divisional principals, psychologists, learning specialists, an occupational therapist, and a speech-language therapist.

The School at Columbia University offers a predoctoral psychology internship training program for eligible doctoral candidates in School and Clinical Psychology programs. For more information about this program, click here.
