Admissions

Application Process

Our application process begins in August, a year before a family would like to enroll a child at The School at Columbia University. Because of our unique program, we have a somewhat different application process for families affiliated with Columbia University and neighborhood families not affiliated with the University. Kindly read more about the details of both application processes.

The School at Columbia follows the New York City Public School’s calendar for birthday cutoffs. Students applying to Kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year must turn five by December 31, 2018. We do not require any educational testing (ERB, etc.) for admission, nor do we have an application fee.

Siblings - Early Process

In past years, The School at Columbia has given preference to children applying to kindergarten who are siblings of currently enrolled students. Given the limited number of available openings at other grade levels, and our commitment to an inclusive, open community, our policy does not extend this consideration to siblings applying to other grades at The School. Our policy has also not given preference in admissions at any grade level to the siblings of students who have graduated or left The School. The cap on siblings admitted to The School's kindergarten class in recent years has been around 20 percent. Siblings not admitted will be placed on the sibling waitlist, and also entered into the neighborhood lottery or Columbia pool.

Any questions about our admissions process and policies should be addressed to our Director of Admissions and Enrollment, Rekha Puri, at admissions@theschool.columbia.edu.
