Neighborhood Families

Who is Eligible to Apply?

  • Applicant families must live in New York City Public School District 3 or 5. Families drawn from the lottery must verify that the primary residence of the student and a custodial parent is within the catchment area via lease or mortgage statement. This must be the same address used for federal tax submissions.
  • Members of Columbia University bargaining units can apply through the neighborhood lottery process if they reside in New York City Public School District 3 or 5.
  • CU and Barnard students, visiting professors, adjunct professors, scholars/fellows, post-doctoral fellows, and all affiliates of Teachers College and Barnard College are not eligible to apply even if they live in District 3 or 5.
  • The School at Columbia follows the New York City Public Schools' calendar for birthday cutoffs: Students applying to Kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year must turn five by December 31, 2017.
  • The School does not require any educational testing (ERB, etc.) for admission, nor do we have an application fee.

How Are Acceptances Determined?

All inquiries submitted between August 15, 2016 and October 15, 2016 are entered into the neighborhood lottery. Applications are sent via email in late October to families drawn from the lottery.

Admissions Timeline

  • Online inquiry opens on August 15, 2016 and closes on October 15, 2016. Families may come in and complete an online form, and assistance is available at the school Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm.
  • All inquiries submitted are entered into the neighborhood lottery. Applications are sent via email in late October to families drawn from the lottery. Application receipt does not guarantee a space.
  • Parent/s must attend a scheduled Open House by November 18, 2016. Kindly refer to the application checklist for exact dates.
  • Application deadline for 2016-17 is November 18, 2016 (must submit completed application, proof of residency and birth certificate)
. School reports are due by November 18, 2016.
  • Kindergarten parent/s and children must attend a Child Visit in December 2016.
  • Grades 1-8 parent/s and children must attend a Child Visit in January 2017.
  • Notifications are mailed in early February 2017.
  • Signed contracts and deposits are due by February 17, 2017.
We have a limited number of openings at each grade level. Because we draw more students from our lottery than we have spaces, children may be placed on our waitlist to be offered admission if additional spaces become available. The waitlist stays active only until the start of school year, and does not automatically carry over to the next year; families must reapply if they wish to be in the next year’s application cycle.
