Community Partner: Bloomingdale School of Music

In this year of Community, we are thrilled to highlight the meaningful work of organizations that partner with our After School Program. On Thursday and Friday afternoons, TSC students walk to Bloomingdale School of Music's (BSM) cozy brownstone on 108th St., carrying violin cases or eager to begin their keyboard or voice lessons. The semester-long classes complement the music exposure and instruction that we value at TSC. We also applaud the myriad free opportunities that BSM offers, including concerts and events led by their own faculty and other musical greats within our community. Their website is filled with diverse resources for both adults and children.

Thank you BSM for joining our TSC community, for sharing music with our students and for attending our Parents Association's Rock the Block and other special events. We look forward to a great rockin' spring semester!

Q: How does BSM mission echo TSC's? What are BSM's community goals?

A: Bloomingdale School of Music's mission is to provide open access to high-quality music education to anyone who seeks it, regardless of economic status, ability level, ethnicity, or religious affiliation. This complements The School at Columbia University's mission to provide a high-quality education to students in a diverse community. We believe music is for all, and we value a student-centered approach, hiring faculty who focus on each individual and how they learn, and who look to help spark interest in music. We aim to make meaningful connections with community partners to complement and support music study. By providing after-school instruction to students from The School at Columbia University, we offer instrumental choices that support the current in-school music offerings.

Q: What sets BSM apart from other music schools? What are BSM's goals with school partnerships/community collaborations?

A: Bloomingdale was born out of the needs of the local area where our founder, David Greer, saw students who could benefit from the opportunity to learn music and attend concerts. With a passion for student learning, and music as a tool to bring community together in a vibrant learning environment, BSM has been a center for music education for 52 years, bringing people together with lessons, classes, and performances for all.

Our goals are to partner with local schools to complement and support. We are also focused on access, with introductory classes for students who want to try an instrument but are not ready to commit to an intensive study until they have a chance to sample it.

We want to find and support the "on ramp" to music study for everyone in our community.
