Community Partner: Harlem School of the Arts

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) is a 52-year-old organization with the mission to bring the arts to the Harlem community and beyond through education, performances, exhibitions, and special events.

HSA currently serves more than 700 students on site in central Harlem, as well as nearly 1,000 students in partner schools, including The School at Columbia University, through HSA Outreach. Other partner schools include The Neighborhood Charter School of Harlem, P.S. 153, P.S. 154, P.S. 261, Harlem Children's Zone, and Harlem International Community School. Additionally, HSA maintains strong creative partnerships with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Manhattan School of Music, Harlem Academy, and many other community and national arts organizations.

The approach to the arts at HSA is holistic and tailored to the individual journeys of students. Sometimes they work with young artists who know by their teen years or earlier that they want to enter an arts profession. Other times, students' experience with the arts is part of a foundation that leads them to acquire skills, confidence and presence to enter careers in government, education, and law.

Upcoming HSA events include:

-A series of new works by internationally acclaimed choreographer Twyla Tharp (April 28-29; May 26-27; June 23-24; all at 7 pm)
